Continuing education is a lifelong learning process which takes place after the completion of the basic nursing/midwifery education programme. It consists of planned learning experiences which are designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of registered nurses and midwives for the enhancement of nursing practice, education, administration and research.

A registered nurse or midwife might wish to pursue further education. Many such opportunities are available and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has approved a number of specialist programmes as well as programmes leading to an additional registration.
