Continuing education is a lifelong learning process which takes place after the completion of the basic nursing/midwifery education programme. It consists of planned learning experiences which are designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of registered nurses and midwives for the enhancement of nursing practice, education, administration and research.
Department of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Limerick
The Postgraduate Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing at RCSI is the first of its kind in Ireland –we have educated over 700 prescribers since the programme’s inception in 2007 – and offers appropriately qualified nurses and midwives the opportunity to enhance the care they provide to patients, clients and service users through the use of their prescriptive authority.
The aims of the Master of Science in Nursing (Advanced Nursing Practice) programme are toenable experienced registered nurses to develop an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills, and clinical competencies for an expanded autonomous scope of practice the characteristics of which are shaped by the: context in which the individual practices; the needs of patients/clients; and the challenges and developments within the health services.
The MSc in Nursing (Advanced Practice Nursing) is designed to prepare nurses to practice at a higher level of capability in independent, autonomous, and expert practice, that is innovative, flexible, and patient-centred. The programme also prepares students for their role as clinical and professional leaders with a commitment to the dissemination of evidence-based knowledge and the instruction of others.
This course prepares suitably qualified, experienced nurses, who wish to pursue a career as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes. The course provides the student with a broad-based education experience incorporating the key concepts of person-centred care, autonomy and empowerment, professional ethics, consultation and collaboration and professional leadership thus enabling them to practice at the highest professional standards across the spectrum of care.
